Owatonna has long been a community defined by strong relationships, local pride, and a commitment to progress. These qualities make our city an attractive place to live, work, and raise a family. As the next generation of professionals establishes roots here, we believe there is an opportunity to build upon those strengths through greater collaboration, engagement, and shared leadership.
Recently, members of the Owatonna Chamber's Young Professionals (ages 18-39) came together to discuss what makes Owatonna a great place for young professionals and where opportunities exist to make our community even stronger.
The conversation highlighted many of Owatonna's strengths, including its welcoming atmosphere, thriving local businesses, downtown improvements, and strong community connections. Events such as Downtown Thursdays, Business After Hours, the Lighted Parade, and the Steele County Free Fair were recognized as important parts of what makes Owatonna special.
Participants also identified challenges, including housing affordability, access to childcare, and the need for additional and modernized recreational and social
opportunities. Ideas included expanded family-friendly amenities, community gathering spaces, recreational leagues, professional development programs, and more opportunities for young professionals to connect across businesses and organizations.
These observations are not criticisms of Owatonna, but opportunities to build upon what already makes our community successful. Attracting young professionals is important, but creating an environment where they want to stay, invest, and raise families is equally essential.
Perhaps the most significant discussion centered on civic engagement and leadership. When asked whether young professionals feel they have a meaningful voice in community decisions, most participants indicated they did not.
This presents an opportunity to strengthen communication and involvement across generations. Participants expressed interest in serving on boards, commissions, and community organizations but identified barriers such as meeting schedules, unfamiliarity with leadership opportunities, and uncertainty about how to become involved.
Mentorship, greater awareness of opportunities, and intentional invitations to participate could help bridge these gaps.
Young professionals are not asking to be handed leadership positions. We are asking for opportunities to participate, contribute, and earn the responsibility that comes with them.
We recognize that meaningful involvement requires more than just sharing ideas. It requires listening, respecting different perspectives, contributing time, and being willing to help turn conversations into action.
Our goal is not to replace established leadership, but to work alongside those whose dedication has made Owatonna the community it is today. By combining the experience of longtime leaders with the energy and perspectives of emerging professionals, we can strengthen our community for generations to come.
The roundtable also reinforced an important consideration for local employers: recruiting talented individuals is only part of the equation. Helping employees establish connections beyond the workplace creates a greater sense of belonging and encourages long-term investment in Owatonna.
We encourage businesses, civic organizations, nonprofits, and community leaders to continue creating opportunities for younger residents to not only become involved but connect them with other young professionals and resources in the community. Likewise, we encourage our fellow young professionals to step forward, volunteer, support local organizations, and pursue opportunities to serve.
The future of Owatonna is not the responsibility of any one generation. It is a shared commitment that requires collaboration, mutual respect, and a willingness to work together.
We are proud to call Owatonna home, grateful for those who have invested in its success, and optimistic about what lies ahead.
Our message is simple: We are here. We are invested. We are ready to contribute. Together, we can ensure Owatonna remains a welcoming, thriving community where every generation has the opportunity to belong, lead, and succeed.
Sincerely,
Owatonna Young Professionals
