Workforce Initiatives-Growing Career Readiness
Career openings abound in the Owatonna area. Steele County has one of the highest concentrations of manufacturing jobs in Minnesota – more than double the state average. The county also outpaces the nation in the percentage of finance/insurance jobs – a mark of its skilled, diverse workforce. Owatonna boasts more than 40 industrial firms, several with international distribution. Additionally there are significant openings in the health care industry, retail and service sectors.
The Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism is committed to working with our member businesses and the school district to ensure there are opportunities for students to be career ready after graduation. Twenty-five percent (25%) of high school graduates do not have a plan for after graduation and the Chamber with its community partners have several initiatives to give students career experiences.
Made In Owatonna Days
165 high school students experience firsthand the opportunities for not only a job, but a career during the school year through Made in Owatonna Day. Student interest in pursuing internships grew from 18.5% before the tours to 32% after the tours this year. The program focuses on career opportunities through out the community. Made in Owatonna Days are a Partnership with the Bosch Community Fund, United Way, Junior Achievement, Owatonna Public Schools, and the Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism.
